Cabbage Tree Cards
Original pen & ink drawing A3 size
Such an iconic tree that almost instantly notes the coast is near !
Words on the back of the card:
" As it appears absent from much of Fiordland this iconic New Zealand native palm was likely originally introduced by Maori to the Chatham Islands and grows in a broad range of places such as forest margins, open places and river and swamp banks.
It’s fruits sustain the New Zealand pigeon as well as originally providing durable fibre for Maori to create textiles, anchor ropes, fishing lines, baskets, waterproof rain capes, cloaks and sandles.
The familiar clatter and rattle of those fibrous leaves in the wind always invoke memories of warm sea breezes to me. As well as NZ it always reminds me of holidays in Devon & Cornwall as it is also known as the Torquay Palm in the UK. "
